A first time voter's dilemma

I am 47 years old, but I have never exercised my franchise. It is not that I have chosen not to vote, but circumstances were such that I never got an opportunity to vote. When my vote was in Kerala, I was in Agartala, when my vote was in Agartala, I was in Chennai. By the time I got enrolled in Chennai, I was transferred to Mumbai. Advantages of working for ONGC which keeps sending you packing every 4 to 5 years!!

When my next turn for transfer to Assam came in 2001, I got a job with an oil company in Abu Dhabi and end this game of hide and seek. I never wanted to become and NRI, but there I was in the desert jungle losing my franchise forever.

With the recent discussions to allow NRIs to vote, came the new dilemma for me. Whom to vote?.

Throughout my school and college days, I was a left supporter mainly because I was the nephew of NE Balaram!. As I grew up, I tried to rationalize my belief by observing the party and finding good in whatever they did. I believed that they will do something for the state and the country. With passage of time, my hope evaporated and most of the communist and marxist leaders changed their avtaars and became neo communists(intolerant, irresponsible and power hungry.......). A party which has been in existence for more than 75 years could not capture the imagination of the people and they got restricted to a few pockets in Kerala and Tripura, that too just  because of blind faith of millions of people like me! . They never connected with people, but kept repeating age old theories which the common man never understood or cared for. They got alienated and destroyed themselves. The dream of the selfless leaders who toild day and night to bring up the party went in vain. I salute them.

Less said about the Congress, the better.

I was always against discriminating people based on caste religion. I could never support the BJP's ideologies. When Narendra Modi was selected as Prime ministerial candidate, I never thought that he could take BJP to such a dramatic victory. Since then I have been following what Modi has been doing. He has been making the right noises. I think the politicians and media of Kerala have been overly critical about Modi.

Even today if I get an opportunity to vote, I will struggle to vote for BJP and may end up voting for communists. But I have started asking myself the question ""If  you could blindly support  party and try to rationalize it by non existent positives which were creations of imagination, why you should not support  a party which at least is talking the right things?"

I hope to decide by the time my turn to vote comes up!!

  1. Well said Rakeshettan.. As a matter of fact, this is the mind set of an average Indian, or at least Malayali. Let's wait and see if the Modi magic leads India to a brighter tomorrow or to the ages of black magic..

  2. Well said. Its the confusion of so many malayalees why we vote for these leaders who shows their intolerance to common man. The first time we get a leader with good views so I think it's the time of changing our mind .
